editing project

Cutting on Action:

In this clip there is a example of cutting on action, which is a editing technique that creates the illusion of continuous movement between shots. The video shows a woman swinging a sword at an old man and when the sword comes down the scene cuts to a different angle to show the continuity of the shot.

Dissolve:

This clip shows a dissolve transition which is when one shot gradually fades into another. In the video men are seen exiting a building and their shadows dissolve into a nighttime scene of the same group gathered around a campfire. This typically is showing the passage of time.

Fade In/Out:

This video shows both fade-in and fade-out transitions. The scene begins with a black screen that fades into a shot of a man and a woman talking and then fades back to black. Fades are mostly used to signal the beginning or end of a scene.

Wipes:

In this clip a wipe transition is used to replace one scene with another. The new scene comes across the screen in a visual wipe. Its a great form of trasition.

Freeze Frame:

This clip shows a freeze frame where the actual movement stops and the image is frozen in time. In this scene the character jumps to the air and the shot freezes mid-action. Freeze frames are great for dramatizing a specific moment in time.

Match Cut:

This example shows several match cuts a technique where two shots are visually like connected. For example, a character's hand grabbing an object in one scene might transition to a different character or same character holding something in a similar position. This is also a big part of contiunity.

My Video:

In my video I went through and provided the following editing techniques. Cutting on Action, Dissolve, Fade In, Freeze Frame, and a Match Cut. Throughout my time working on this project I had no issue in implementing the techniques themselves in fact editing itself came very easy. However what I struggled with was working alone and making content to edit for myself. I not only struggled to create the content but also didn't enjoy it as much and it added to my delay in producing work. It was much to just have quality content and edit and add bits where they seemed fit.

Going deeper into how I implemented each technique I was looking for that continuous flow from one shot to the next or at least, from one technique to the other. I left my first shot with a wipe to the left as my subject was walking out towards the left side of the viewing window, I was almost trying to establish that 180 degree feel of having a sense of direction. The cutting on action was just cuts on basic actions it wasn't anything super crazy and it got the job done, its something I'd like to improve upon and get a little more creative with in the future. My match cut was used to establish what exactly was stumping the viewer which was why the car was not turning on. The dissolve was used to change scenes and go into more of a transition. Towards the end I couldn't exactly figure out the best way to implement the fade in, so I used it to fade outside the car and watch it turn on and back inside the car. Finally finishing off with a freeze frame to establish the end of the project.
