Film Analysis Part 1

As the statement goes less is more and with the quiet place the presentation of the opening scene was so amazing because it lacked dialoge making the viewer listen in and focus more, will get into this later. My genre for my project is horror/crime and with this I decieded to choose a quite place to represent an idea of a great opening scene. I will admit originally I only picked a quite place just off the name alone, it sounded scary but also because of what I've heard from friends who have seen the film. After watching just the opening I myself will be watching the movie soon too. Lets break it down. Mise en scene, that overall look and feel of the movie, from the title alone it was a giveaway at the no talking however the actual implimentation of it was tremendous. We have five senses in real life, touch, smell, sight, taste, and sound. You cant exactly touch, smell or, taste a movie. Traditonally leaving you with just the viewing of a movie and audio. While not taking away that actually audio it limits dialogue causing the viewer to me attenative to understand whats going on. With the scenes displaying a cinematic adventure the omnious instramentals cause a build up, stiring the potential for something to happen. The cinematography was heavy on capturing our subjects and because like I mentioned we dont have dialoge to hear what a character may be thinking those match cut shots onto what a character is viewing or displaying intrest in were critical. For example the little boy picking up the rocket ship batteries or the father noticing the monster rampaging towards the boy. For editing obiously the cgi in the monster itself was well worked on, but more simply the strining together of clips. Its a linear timeline that builds upon itself in chronological order and easy to follow. It wasnt overdone but just right. My teacher once told me the best edits are the ones that go unnoticed and its true you want the most seemless and enjoyable watch possible. Sound was a heavy driver in this opening display and I'm sure in the movie in general. As if I havent talked about it enough the audio and play with the ominous instraments to build suspense or to cause a sense of unease was remarkable. It was well done and well put together and something I've taken notice on and want to impliment into my own project, as this shows just how crucial good sound is. So far on my own project I actually have been picking audio from older movies such as back to the future to pick up some retro sound effects. While it isnt at all a horror movie some of the audio/effects are definetly can be multipurposeful. I'm still shopping around though and may go into ghost busters as well, I could just look up scary movies but I thought taking some of my childhood movies would be a fun little gimmick to throw in.
