Media Reflection #5
At this point in the course I have been around enough and been exposed to enough material to begin to understand and compose somewhat a educated perspective on a couple of different questions/topics I've discussed previously on my blog. The difference is now I will be giving my opoinion supported with everything I know now which I was missing just entering the course. To begin the responsibilities of creators with respect to representations of groups in their films. If I remember correctly in short I answered this by saying should be the creators responsibilities to represent cultural groups correctly in thing like documentaries or even just in general, however I stated that their should be an exception for things like comedies and entertainment. I still stand by this thought. This is because a huge plethra of movies have been made with certain culturals or ethnicitys as the subject or core of the film. Such as Moana, in this type of movie chattered towards children and familes I beleive it should represent this group of people as accurately as possible so its not offesnive but also respectful. But in movies such as the Dictator which is around the middle eastern culture to some it can be offensive and thats their right but to others its a comedy which was the intent of the film to begin with. In the film projects I've worked on to be quite frank representation was never even a thought in my mind, I was always more driven to produce content then to produce something with a more significant value. It's not because I don't care but it just wasnt in my intrest at the time and its made me realise that even in the real world of production maybe all there trying to do is produce content rather then have equal representation which to a large group of people can be tiring to keep up with if one day the main character is one person and throughout a series changes over and over, effectively losing engagement. In terms of my consumption habits, I still go and view all the main stream meida productions, however I have much more respect and more of an urge to find indpendent film makers who produce content I like and try to support them. Thats because finding some more smaller effectively is more cateter towards my likes than something made for everyone. Throughout my time in the course I have been learning new things and while its still a class as school I could see long term becoming a hobby. I've taken a joy in learning how to work a camera and go out and film places around where I go to school, working with lighting at night time and seeing the glow of street lights on the camera was just an enjoyable experience overall to begin with. I also have continue to improve on editing, learning new techniques on how to better transition and more importantly adding in title scenes have been a challange that I've liked playing around with. Overall my relationship to media has definietly shifted away from average everyday consumer, sometimes even when I view things on tv or in the movie theater time to time I like to think about how I could recreate something so high quality and its even something Im working on with our project. So I would say I no longer conform to that everyday watcher but more of that media enthusiast.
